Los Angeles Plays Itself
A long overdue release for Thom Andersen’s film about Los Angeles through the movies
It’s 11 years since Los Angeles Plays Itself, Thom Andersen’s beautiful and evocative tribute to Los Angeles pieced together with clips from more than 200 feature films, was first screened. But outings for this fantastic look at how the city is presented in the movies have been few and far between, as copyright problems have always cast a shadow over the three hour flick which came about from a lecture Anderson delivered at the California Institute of the Arts in the late 1990s.
All of this now seems to have been solved to one extent to another, because Los Angeles Plays Itself gets a full DVD release next month. As a film about films – and a film about a great, sprawling city – it’s one you should definitely add to your must-see list.
