Lady Lamb the Beekeeper

Portland’s best kept secret may be out. Aly Spaltro has already released a slew of home-recordings, but new album “Ripely Pine” for Ba Da Bing should bring her bracing, bittersweet torch songs, folky twists and strong emotional punch to a larger audience.

Straight out of Oakland but now living in Harlem, Gita’s new-school hip-hop smarts has already produced a couple of boom tunes in “Hood Rich” and newbie “Mardi Gras” and collaborated with Grimes. We like her tough, sassy sound and thrilling potential. One to watch while we wait for other rappers (that’s you Azealia) to get their shizz together.

Frugal Father

From Colorado, Mac Welch tours with bands as a roadie and tour manager, but we reckon he’ll soon be too busy with his own work for those gigs. “Red Haired Hipster” and “First Trim” show Welch’s smarts, blending electronic fizz and pop sass into great, infectious, fun tunes with nods left and right to James Murphy and Matthew Dear.
