Prodigiously gifted and famously temperamental, Joseph Mallord William Turner is a towering figure among 19th- century European landscape painters, one who is seen as a precursor of aspects of Impressionism and Abstraction. The National Gallery of Ireland is fortunate in having 31 watercolours and drawings bequeathed by Henry Vaughan in 1900. (Additional watercolours have come from other sources.)

To protect the pigment, Vaughan specified that the works could only be exhibited in the winter months. Lighting technology has moved on, but the stipulation is still honoured and January is your month-long chance to see the Turners.

This year selected prints from Turner’s Liber Studiorum, in which he spelled out his ideas on the principles of painting, are also on view, and there’s a beautiful new catalogue of the gallery’s Turner collection by Anne Hodge and Niamh MacNally.
