Avonmore still top of the pops with Irish consumers

New survey shows Coca-Cola remains the leading global consumer food brand

Avonmore remains Ireland's most popular homegrown brand with 81 per cent of consumers choosing it at least 27 times a year, according to a new survey.

The Kantar Worldpanel’s Brand Footprint ranking of Ireland’s most chosen Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), shows Avonmore retaining the top spot, albeit with a smaller consumer reach than last year.

Brennans was in second place in the rankings with 73.3 per cent of the population opting for its products on average 24 times a year.

Denny, Knorr and Jacobs round out the top five most chosen homegrown brands, according to the study. Galtee, which came in 10th place, was the fastest growing brand, rising from 16th place last year.

"Irish brands such as Brennans and Denny continue to dominate, showing that shoppers are looking for brands that they know and trust. Knowing exactly where our food is coming from is more important than ever after the horsemeat scandal, and has reinforced the importance of brands with clear Irish roots to our consumers," said David Berry, commercial director at Kantar Worldpanel.

In the global Brand Footprint Top 50 ranking, only 16 brands were chosen more than one billion times last year - with Coca-Cola the top-ranked brand. Multinational FMCG brands are being chosen, on average, by just 18 per cent of the global population, the study shows.

Coca-Cola was chosen 5.8 billion times by global consumers in the last year, 120 million more times than in 2012. This 2 per cent growth came mainly from Central America, Colombia, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Russia and Thailand.

Nescafe is the second most popular global brand, chosen 2.2 billion times by consumers. Pepsi, Sprite and Tang round out the top five leading FMCG goods.
