Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits northeast of Taiwan

Quake struck below the seabed, says US survey

A strong, 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck northeast off the island of Taiwan on Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey.

It said the quake struck at 5.03am on Thursday at a depth of 254km below the seabed, which would have lessened its impact.

The epicenter was 106km northeast of the capital, Taipei.
