Supporters welcome Keane signing

15/12/2005: The secretary of the Celtic Supporters Association has welcomed the signing of Roy Keane.

The 34-year-old has joined the Hoops until the summer of 2007 after his contract with Manchester United was terminated by mutual consent last month.

The midfielder had made no secret of his desire to play for the Glasgow giants and Jim Divers of the CSA insists the fans will welcome the arrival of Keane with open arms.

He said: "We know we are getting someone exceptional in British football.

"Everyone here in Glasgow - and fans around the world - is excited at the prospect of seeing Roy Keane in green and white hoops.

"Everyone has their opinion but the majority of fans I have listened to are excited by the fact he is coming to Celtic Park.

"The Celtic fans pay their money and they want the best in the world. We have secured one of the best players in the world for 18 months.

"Under (manager) Gordon Strachan, we are playing exceptionally well and have so many young players coming through.

"Keane is a master on the training pitch and can pass on his experience."

But, despite Keane's reputation for questioning former managers, Divers is convinced he will recognise Strachan's qualities.

He added: "It is up to the manager and he will be speaking to Keane. Roy Keane will be sensible enough to realise he has a good manager and will work with him to work with where he is playing."
