Brett Wetterich might be an unfamiliar name when his name get announced on the first tee at the K-Club but the 32-year-old has been a professional for 12 years and made his breakthrough win on the PGA Tour at this year's EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

When he beat Trevor Immleman at the Byron Nelson he dedicated the win to his brother Mark who was killed in by a drunk driver in Chicago three years ago. He also has his brother's initials MTW in bold letters on his tour bag.

The $1.1million Wetterich earned from his his win was almost as much as he had previously earned since turning pro in 1994. During that period he spent time on the Nationwide Tour where he won the 2003 Chitimacha Louisiana Open and the Envirocare Utah Classic the following year.

In 2005 he looked to be in the plum seat going into the latter stages of the Honda Classic but two bogeys and a double on the back nine meant he missed out on a place in the play-off, which Padraig Harrington would eventually go on and win.

In all Wetterich has recorded four top 10 finishes in this campaign beginning with the Shell Houston Open in April, followed by the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the next week. Then two weeks later in May he won the Byron Nelson title, which came one week before finishing runner-up in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

Wetterich, like Tom Lehman's other rookies, is a relatively unknown quantity but that ambiguity could work in the American's favour.
