JJ Henry has been a steady operator on the PGA Tour in recent times but when he secured his maiden victory at the Buick Championship after 177 attempts it also virtually guaranteed his place on Tom Lehman's side.
The 31-year-old is one of Lehman's rookies and therefore somewhat of an unknown quantity when it comes to the Ryder Cup. That said, he arrived on merit and has a sound all round game. It's expected that Lehman will use some of the more experienced campaigners to partner Henry in an attempt to find the right balance.
During his time at the Texas Christian University Henry finished runner-up in the 1998 individual NCAA men's championship. Later that year he turned pro and cut his teeth on the Nationwide Tour. In winning the 2000 Knoxville Open he graduated to the main tour and although not setting the place alight enjoyed a five solid years in the big league.
Henry is from Connecticut so to have won the Buick Championship this year in his home state was something of a homecoming. The TPC River Highlands course in Cromwell was also the same course that Henry made his tour debut as an amateur 1998. The Buick win earned Henry 375 valuable Ryder Cup points as he became the sixth first-time winner on the PGA Tour.
