For the second time in succession Stewart Cink has had to rely on a wild card pick in order to make his third Ryder Cup appearance. The tall American made his debut at the Belfry in 2002 then Hal Sutton chose him for Oakland Hills in 2004.
This time around Cink had run close but just mised out on an automatic place but Tom Lehman opted for the 33-year-old alongside Scott Verplank for proceedings at the K Club. The pair are seen to bring more experience to an American team which contains four rookies.
Cink immediately validated his 2004 pick by wining the WGC - NEC Invitational the following week when he beat Rory Sabbatini and Tiger Woods in a wire-to-wire victory. This time around he almost accomplished the same feat except he narroely lost out to Tiger Woods at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational one week after Lehman confirmed him as a wild card.
Cink only has a 34 per cent success record from his two previous Ryder Cups and has yet to record a win in the singles. However he still has a wealth of experience and was regarded as a fair and logical pick this time around.
