All the jockeying for places is now complete and both sets of wildcard selections for the two Ryder Cup sides have been made.
Upon completion of the USPGA Championship American captain Tom Lehman opted for Stewart Cink, who has played in the last two encounters, and Scott Verplank who played at the Belfry in 2002.
European captain Ian Woosnam made his selections two weeks later after the BMW Championship in Munich. Woosie had a number of realistic candidates he could have chosen but in the end went for the experienced pair of Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood - both have competed in the last four Ryder Cups.
The reaction to Woosie’s wildcard picks is well-documented at this stage but one thing it does show is the desire to play in this bi-ennial event.
After Clarke made himself available, following the death of his wife Heather in August, Woosnam stipulated he must play in the Madrid Masters, the week before the Ryder Cup.
With that in place he also went for Westwood, who has won the European Open twice around the K-Club and has excellent form in the foursomes format.
