Mike Phillips
Wales (Ospreys)
After the loss of Toms O'Leary, Phillips is in pole position for a test start. The Welshman is rarity of an international scrumhalf, standing at six feet and three inches, but that may be just what the Lions need against the physical Springboks.
Despite his size, he is as good as any northern hemisphere number nine at sniping around the fringes and can show a surprising turn of pace, given the slightest opportunity.
Links well with Stephen Jones for Wales and his ability to produce quick ball will benefit the playmakers at outhalf. Harry Ellis and Chris Cusiter will need to produce the goods if they are to replace the Ospreys man.
