Paul O'Connell

Ireland (Munster)

Having been awarded the captaincy ahead of his Irish team-mate Brian O'Driscoll, the Lion King will be required to lead by example in what will prove to be the most arduous of tours.

Scored a try on his Ireland debut against Wales at Lansdowne Road in 2002 - it was Eddie O'Sullivan's first game in charge - and hasn't look back since. Started all five games in the 2003 World Cup and became a fixture in the second row, when not injured. Scored the last ever international try at Lansdowne Road in 2006.

Two Heineken Cup victories, three Triple Crowns, a Grand Slam and started all three tests for Lions in New Zealand (2005). A talismanic figure and one of world rugby's best players, his duel with Victor Matfield in the lineout will be one of the fascinating battles of the Test series.

Had a colossal game against the Royal XV, leading by deed, carrying relentlessly and effectively and was only outshone by fullback Lee Byrne.
