The Morning Sports Briefing

Serena Slam still on after win over Venus, Rory faces nervous wait on ankle, Jim McGuinness on the Munster final and fourth place in stage three for Dan Martin

Djokovic and Anderson stopped by light

Defending champion Novak Djokovic fought back from a two-set deficit in his Wimbledon fourth round tie against South Africa’s Kevin Anderson to force a decider before bad light on Court One brought proceedings to an end last night.

Djokovic and Anderson resume this morning with the game all square at 7-6, 7-6, 6-1, 6-4 and both men will be hoping to join British number one Andy Murray and Roger Federer in the last eight after they saw off Ivo Karlovic and Roberto Bautista Agut respectively.

Serena Williams came out on top in the latest instalment of her sibling rivalry with sister Venus yesterday, the world number one winning 6-4, 6-3 on Centre Court to remain on course for the 'Serena Slam'.

Rory faces British Open wait

Rory McIlroy faces a number of scans and a nervous wait to determine the extent of the damage caused to his left ankle and whether or not his injury will keep him out of next week's British Open at St Andrews.

The world number one posted on instagram yesterday showing himself with a protective boot over his foot after an injury sustained playing football, and while he has had to pull out of this week’s Scottish Open he is yet to rule himself out his Claret Jug defence at the Old Course.

Jim McGuinness column

In his latest column Jim McGuinness looks at last weekend’s thrilling drawn Munster football final between Kerry and Cork and believes the shape and form of both teams makes the replay an intriguing prospect.

The replay is likely to go ahead on Saturday week in Killarney with police advising the match takes place as late as possible after major traffic issues the last time the town held a game on a Saturday, the Cork-Tipperary qualifier in 2004.

RTE will have to ask the permission of Sky to televise the game as it would mean Sky re-scheduling their 7pm match for 3pm, a request they are likely to comply to.

Westmeath head into the Leinster Senion football final against Dublin as serious underdogs, however skipperGer Egan maintains the county have a real chance of winning as they continue to bask in the warm afterglow of beating Meath in the semis.

Cork women's football manager Eamonn Ryan has questioned the fixture conflict which sees his side and the Cork camogie side playing fixtures just hours apart, despite having a number of dual-players set to features for both teams.

Froome takes yellow jersey

Chris Froome has the yellow jersey in the Tour de France after a second place finish in a third stage which was marred by a huge 20-man crash. Ireland's Dan Martin came fourth into Huy.
