Brown blitzes Nadal at Wimbledon, UCD take a lead to Luxembourg, Tiger back on the prowl at Greenbrier Classic and Clare and Offaly meet 20 years on

Dustin Brown thrills Centre Court

Rafael Nadal became the first heavyweight casualty of Wimbledon yesterday as he was blitzed in four sets by the scintillating Dustin Brown, whose unconventional style never allowed the two-time winner to settle.

The dreadlocked German has a ranking of 102 and had never played on Centre Court before but he made it his own, and his victory means Nadal has now failed to progress past the fourth round in his last four attempts.

Elsewhere in SW19 Andy Murray made light work of Dutchman Robin Haase, winning 6-1 6-1 6-4, Roger Federer saw off Sam Querrey 6-4 6-2 6-2 and Caroline Wozniackisurvived a second set wobble as she beat Denisa Allertova 6-1 7-6.

Good night in Europe for UCD

It was a mixed night for the Irish contingent in Europe last night but all three sides have given themselves a chance of making it into the Europa League second qualifying round.

Emmet Malone was at Belfield where UCD produced a shock, winning 1-0 against Luxembourg's F91 Dudelange thanks to a goal from Ryan Swam.

Cork City took the lead against KR Reykjavik but were pegged back at Turners Cross, drawing 1-1, while Aaron Green scored a potentially priceless away goal for St Patrick's Athletic as they went down 2-1 away to Skonto Riga.

McDowell with work to do in Paris

Graeme McDowell has work to do if he wants to secure his third French Open win on the bounce after he shot 72 in a weather affected opening round in Paris, leaving him one over par.

Tiger Woods produced his best PGA Tour round of the season, shooting a 66 in the Greenbrier Classic to leave him four shots off the lead and firmly in the hunt.

The world amateur number one Leona Maguire has a share of 12th place in the Ladies European Masters after a three under par opening round of 69.

Clare and Offaly 20 years on

September will mark 20 years since Clare and Offaly contested the All-Ireland final and with the two counties facing each other in the first round of the hurling qualifiers tomorrow Brian Lohan and Eamon Cregan look back at the final of 1995.

Waterford's Pauric Mahony is still on crutches following his horrendous shin break sustained playing for his club Ballygunner and although he won't be back on a hurling pitch until 2016 he is on the road to recovery.
