St Patrick’s Athletic 0 Hannover 3:St Patrick Athletic’s hopes of improbable progress into the Europa League disappeared tonight thanks to a 3-0 home defeat to Hannover 96 in the third qualifying round first leg tie.

The League of Ireland side were behind after just six minutes when their Bundesliga visitors scored through Dane Leon Andreasen’s long range effort.

The homeside spent the rest of the evening chasing the game and their opponents, whose superiority was apparent throughout.

It was the 66th minute, however, when Hannover doubled their lead, another long range effort in the shape of a Christian Pander that goalkeeper Brendan Clarke might have done better with.

Ten minutes from time the German side got their third when Didier Ya Konan pounced after Clarke failed to hold Konstantin Rausch’s effort.

Gomel 0 Liverpool 1: Brendan Rodgers’ first match in charge of Liverpool ended in victory after a 1-0 win against Gomel in their qualifier at the Central Stadion in Belarus.

Stewart Downing’s 25-yard effort midway through the second half was enough to give the Reds the edge going into the second leg match at Anfield next Wednesday.

Gomel dominated the majority of the game and the Merseysiders were lucky to leave with the win after the hosts missed plenty of chances.
