Cork City 4 Derry City 1: A brilliant hat-trick from teenage striker Danny Morrissey gave Cork an emphatic victory at Turners Cross last night.
Morrissey opened the scoring on 13 minutes. Following a flowing move, fellow striker Ciaràn Kilduff passed the ball into young Morrissey’s path, and his powerful shot found the roof of Ger Doherty’s net.
Derry the cup holders defeated Bluebell United in a Tuesday third round replay, with defenders Shane McElaney and Ryan McBride returning to the team last night after injury.
The visitors had the wind at their backs after the break and had penalty appeals turned down, when striker Rory Patterson tumbled in the box, before the Derry attacker thumped a shot off the Cork post in the 55th minute.
But from there Cork took over. Morrissey made it 2-0 on 67 minutes, racing through the middle and firing low past Doherty. He completed his hat-trick on 74 minutes, cutting in from the left before sending a fine shot to the bottom corner of the visitors net.
Kilduff lobbed the ball over Doherty to send Cork 4-0 in front, much to the delight of 2,044 home fans, in the 77th minute.
Patterson hammered home a late consolation for Derry with seven minutes remaining.
