Seamus Coleman facing weeks on the sidelines

Ankle injury likely to rule Republic of Ireland defender out of Serbia qualifier

Seamus Coleman is a doubt for Ireland's opening game of the World Cup campaign at the start of next month with Ronald Koeman confirmed over the weekend that the Donegalman faces several weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

The 27 year-old was pictured wearing a protective boot on his left foot but no further details were provided. Ireland teammate, James McCarthy, filled in for him, playing as a right wing back, as Everton drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur.

Jeff Hendrick will be assessed on Monday after limping out of Derby's defeat at Barnsley just 12 minutes in with a hamstring problem and David McGoldrick will be seen by a specialist on Tuesday after missing Ipswich's game at Brentford in which young defender John Egan, from Cork, scored twice for the home side.

The Ireland squad for the game in Belgrade against Serbia, and the preceding friendly at home to Oman, is due to be named this week.
