Athletics:Brian Gregan has underlined his gold medal potential at next month's European Indoor Championships by winning the 400 metres at the IAAF Permit meeting in Gent, his winning time of 46.73 seconds enough to get the better of Belgian number one Jonathan Borlee, who took second in 46.83.

At the AAI Junior U23 championships, held at the superb Athlone IT Arena, Ciara Everard of Kilkenny City Harriers won the under-23 800m in 2:02.54, also inside the standard for the European indoor Championships, and a new Irish record, improving on the 2:02.87 of Aisling Molloy in 1990. Sarah Lavin broke Derval O’Rourke’s 60m hurdles record (set in 1999) in a new time of 8.44.
