Kilkenny CBS reach All-Ireland Colleges hurling decider

Kenny star man as Mercy Colleges are defeated

Kevin Kenny was the star man, registering 1-4 as Kilkenny CBS brushed Mercy College aside in Saturday's All-Ireland Colleges SHC 'A' semi-final at St Rynagh's Park, Banagher. CBS haven't won an All-Ireland Colleges title since 1981 and after narrowly losing out to Nenagh CBS in the 2012 final they are determined to complete unfinished business.

Mercy Colleges — an amalgamation of St Raphael's, Loughrea & Mercy College, Woodford – led by 0-7 to 0-4 at the interval. Galway senior panellist Jason Flynn was prominent contributing four points, while lively corner forward Kevin McHugo was on target twice. Inspired by the brilliant Kenny, CBS produced a powerful second half performance during which they outscored their opponents 1-8 to 0-3.

A 36th minute successful Flynn ’65 made it 0-8 to 0-6 in Mercy Colleges’ favour but they’d to wait 17 minutes before they raised a flag again as Cathal McGrath, Robbie Fitzpatrick and Evan Cody erected the CBS defensive shutters. CBS hit an unanswered 1-3 between the 43rd and 50th minutes and this score blitz put them 1-9 to 0-8 up. Paddy Cahill (free), Niall Mullins and Kenny notched points before Kenny rattled the net to seal the game.

The other semi-final takes place tomorrow as Dungarvan Colleges face St Kieran’s Colleges in Carriganore (WIT Sports Campus) at 2pm.
