And with former selector Mattie Kenny and U-21 manager Johnny Kelly also confirming to Galway officials this week that they are bidding for the position, Cunningham faces a real challenge to remain in charge.
Galway hurling officials are confident of having their manager for 2015 in place by the end of September with interviews due to start in the coming weeks.
Galway hurling chairman Joe Byrne yesterday confirmed that all four would be contesting the position.
Interviews are being lined up and prospective candidates will asked to outline their management team. Cunningham, whose three-year term ended with the qualifier loss to Tipperary, remains the favourite to hold on to the job.
