Five see red in fractious derby
Cavan 1-10 Monaghan 0-5:Five players were red-carded as football took a back seat in a fractious derby duel at Kingspan/Breffni Park.
Referee Barry Cassidy was the busiest man on the field as local rivalry made way for gross indiscipline on behalf of both sides.
Monaghan talisman Conor McManus was first to be red-carded after his marker, Killian Brady, was left needing treatment in an off-the-ball incident in the 12th minute.
Monaghan boss Malachy ORourke refused to throw the book at his top scorer and, instead, took a pop at officialdom.
“There’s no need for any changing of any rule if the umpires and linesman are watching the play and the referee takes a firm grip of the play.”
On foot of second yellow cards, Monaghan’s Gavin Doogan (63) and Dessie Mone (64) also received their marching orders while, earlier, Martin Dunne (19) and John McCutcheon (37) were given straight red cards.
