With a Rory McIlroy cap which he’d bought at a fundraising auction atop his head, Coulter showed a touch that the world number one would have been proud of as he rolled in a 20-footer from just off the green for a winning birdie. Dawson had the chance to extend the match, but his 12-footer shaved the hole.
Newcastle West were emphatic winners of the Pierce Purcell Shield, defeating Gort 4-1 in the final to secure a first green pennant for the club.
