Day ten: Irish in action

James Brown Damien ShawCycling (Individual B Road Race) Brands Hatch, 2.30pm

Saw themselves more as track specialists before they got to Brands Hatch but their bronze in the time trial on Wednesday has made them think again. This will be a war of attrition, though, and possibly a race too far to hope for another medal.

Catherine Walsh Fran Meehan

Cycling (Individual B Road Race)

Brands Hatch, 2.30pm

“It’ll be carnage,” smiled Fran Meehan when asked about the road race. “Every man for himself.” She didn’t look like she necessarily hated the idea either. Two medals in their pockets already, they have nothing to lose here.

Katie George Dunlevy Sandra Fitzgerald

Cycling (Individual B Road Race)

Brands Hatch, 2.30pm

Although they’ve been overshadowed by the heroics elsewhere in the cycling team, Dunlevy and Fitzgerald have been quietly posting personal bests in most of their races. That hasn’t been good enough to get medals but you can’t ask for much more.

Darragh McDonald

Swimming (S6 100m freestyle)

Aquatic Centre, 9.50am

First in the 400m, eighth in the 50m – his results are a reflection of his stamina in the face of the pure speed of some of his rivals. The further they go, the better he goes. Will make the final here (off at 5.42pm), might just nick a medal.

Ellen Keane

Swimming (SB9 100m breaststroke)

Aquatic Centre, 9.40am

First one in, just about the last one out. After making finals in her two weaker events, Keane has had to wait the whole of the games to get to the one where she finished sixth in Beijing. Stronger now, she should be close to a medal in her 5.36pm final.

James Scully

Swimming (S5 100m freestyle)

Aquatic Centre, 10.23

All in all, it’s been a decent enough Paralympics for the young Ratoath swimmer. His fifth place in the 200m freestyle was the highlight and he has a reasonable chance of making the final in this event as well. It goes off at 6.35, making Scully the last Irish athlete in action at the Paralympics if he gets there.
