Clonmel's Guiry grabs draw with late point
Castletroy College 0-9 Clonmel High School 0-9:KEVIN GUIRY snatched a draw for Clonmel High School with a last-gasp point to deny Castletroy College victory in yesterday’s Dr Harty Cup tie in Golden, Co Tipperary.
But there was some debate about Guiry’s equaliser as some Clonmel observers reckoned the ball had gone under, and not over the bar. There was similar disquiet a minute earlier when Castletroy felt John Stack’s shot, which was flagged wide, had gone over the bar. But a draw was a fair result after Guiry launched a wind-assisted effort from distance that had backpedalling goalkeeper Cian O’Dwyer in real trouble.
Clonmel produced a much-improved second-half display, in difficult conditions.
Castletroy had led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time and it could have been more as the Limerick-based outfit registered seven of their 11 wides in the first half.
Clonmel, in their debut Harty Cup season, were reliant on the contribution of full-forward Conor Gleeson from placed balls and general play. He finished with seven points, while Edward Doyle was Castletroy’s leading marksman with four points, all from placed balls.
