Athlone take their chance

Athlone IT 1-13 IT Carlow 0-6:A fortuitous Cathal Shine goal followed immediately by a straight red card for IT Carlow corner back Joe Kinahan decisively turned the tide in this Sigerson Cup first-round tie played at Athlone IT yesterday.

Carlow dominated the early exchanges, four Ben Brosnan frees gave them an early three-point lead. The first of five points from play by Alan Coffey cut that deficit and AIT took the lead in the 20th minute.

Carlow goalkeeper Tom Hughes allowed a free from Cathal Shine ball to slip off his chest and into the net and Athlone pushed on, adding four more points before the interval.

Athlone’s John Mulligan got a straight red card late on.
