Higher Options Conference

Janet Stafford.

The Higher Options Conference takes over the RDS, daily from September 15th to 17th. The event will be full of universities, colleges, institutes of technology and essential information providers for further study. Higher Options takes place to help you make important decisions about what you should study, what career area you would like to work in and what you think you may want to do with the rest of your life (or the next three or four years in any case.)

The Irish Times run the conference alongside the Institute of Guidance Counsellors and guidance counsellors are there throughout the three days to provide helpful advice on what areas to look at for different career and study options and where to gather information. The Irish universities bring staff from different faculties and schools along. You can speak to lecturers and in some cases third level students, who can explain in a really informed way what exactly is on the syllabus and what is involved in studying in a particular area. A good representation from the Further Education (FE) colleges around the country attend and provide information on FE courses, which can be used as excellent qualifications in their own right or as a stepping stone on to further third level courses.

There are a lot of options for study in the UK and the university representatives from there will be able to explain the true costs of studying there, how fees are waived in the Scottish universities and how there may still be places on medical, legal and health sciences courses there when the places are full in Ireland. An increasing number of colleges and institutions provide information on studying in Europe, Australasia and the US too.
Come along to Higher Options if you don't know what course you want to be on and want to gather the information to make smart choices about your future.
