Elton John vs Pnau

Good Morning to the Night Mercury ****

Good Morning to the Night Mercury****

Thanks to Australian dance/ electronic duo Pnau (Peter Mayes and Nick Littlemore), Elton John has recently experienced his first No 1 UK album in more than 20 years. Pnau, whom John signed to his management company some five years ago, have come up with a clever (though not new) concept: refashion some of John’s early 1970s material and weave snippets and slivers into tunes of their own making. Foreign Fields (built around the tracks High Flying Bird and Cage the Songbird) is as cosmic and dreamy as they come, while Black Icy Stare (based on Cold Highway) fuses retro-funk and reggae to useful effect.

And so they go on, remixing John's back pages with electro-pop dream-themes, and forging something quite unpredictable. eltonjohn.com
