The joy of berry-picking

Sir, – I expect that SE Lydon's depiction of the joy of picking wild berries in our hedgerows (August 14th) resurrected for many people memories and tastes of summer times that we can't quite seem to experience anymore.

My wife and I had the joy of a small treasure trove of wild strawberries in July and some early blackberry offerings last weekend in the Glenmalure Valley – both “harvests’ were consumed with relish, as much for their rarity as their true taste. It may well be not just the proliferation of pitches that impacts the joy of berry-picking! – Yours, etc,

PATRICK HOWLIN,

Dublin 14.
