Sir, – I live in London and I read The Irish Times’s gloomy narrative of the Irish as frail, feeble, joyless, depressed, emigrated, and totally banjaxed in this vale of tears. But perhaps that just describes the state of the journalists?

The plain people of Ireland seem to be pushing back against the gloom with their vigorous streams of joyous invention and enjoyment – viz the great read of Flash Fiction and recent glorious correspondence about Beethoven’s Chopin Liszt and the current History of Ireland in over 200 excuses! Thanks for that. – Yours, etc,
