Spanning the aesthetic divide

Sir, – Frank McNally lists the Loop Line bridge as one of Dublin's ugliest such structures ("An Irishman's Diary", April 28th). This may be true, and there is no doubt that it is unloved by most Dubliners, but we are missing a trick here. Let's celebrate its ugliness! I propose that a system of coloured lights be attached within the cross-girders that would be triggered when a Dart crosses the bridge and so a dance of light would follow each train. At the moment, the only colour on it is from the graffiti on its columns.

On the subject of things unloved, is there any chance we could light up the Wellington monument in the Phoenix Park? – Yours, etc,

CONAL McMENAMIN,

Dublin 7.
