Protecting national monuments

Sir, – A few years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Ireland for the first (but I pray not the last) time. My friends and I spent most of our time on the Ring of Kerry. I have a great interest in archaeology so we sought out many local neolithic sites and other places of archaeological importance. I was initially surprised and dismayed to see many of these sites with no protective barriers. But upon closer inspection, I was pleasantly surprised to see these treasures largely unmolested and graffiti-free!

What a wonderful testament to the Irish people that there is such ingrained respect for the sentinels of even the distant past and that the modern and the ancient so easily co-exist as complementary hues in the tapestry that Ireland continues to weave. – Yours, etc,
