Problems with the property tax
Sir, – The Revenue tells me that I must be honest when I self-assess the value of my home and it generously offers the assistance of guidelines in two ways: its website, and the assessment that arrived through the post.
The Revenue.ie website suggests my house falls into the €350,000-€400,000 band. The assessment that I have received by post from Revenue puts my house in the €500,000-€550,000 band. My neighbours who live in a semi-detached house which is virtually identical to mine have received notification from Revenue that their house falls into the €400,000-€450,000 band.
When the data supplied has such a wide variation of valuations, I wonder which one will be used to decide that my honest assessment is, in fact, dishonest. – Yours, etc,
