Plight of refugees in Ireland

Sir, – According to the most recent available statistics of the Reception and Integration Agency, more than 58,000 people have sought refuge in Ireland since 2000. Currently almost 5,000 people, men, women and children, are applying for refugee status and 75 per cent of them are in RIA accommodation between two, and an incredible seven years.

Perhaps on World Refugee Day (today) it would be reasonable to appeal for some resolution of this scarcely acceptable position, given the isolation, loneliness and desperate economic situation of these people? – Yours, etc,

Rathmiles Grove,

Killenard, Co Laois.
