Naming the new bridge

Sir, – In relation to your Editorial (October 29th), it is inspiring that we have had so many fine citizens to consider commemorating and the numerous proposals from the public cast doubt on the adage that Ireland is a land of begrudgers.

Nevertheless, while Abbey Bridge, the title which you believe “makes perfect sense and should be supported”, is a reasonable and obvious proposal, a public debate to select an Irish citizen whom to commemorate would increase public awareness of the quality of our heritage and inspire citizens of today to emulate the achievements of past citizens. In this time of economic despondency, a commemoration of one of our many past distinguished citizens would inspire and comfort Irish citizens of today. – Yours, etc,

Buckley’s Court,

Co Kildare.
