Mobile phones and cars

Sir, – I would suggest that a law dealing with mobile phones in cars ought not to allow hands-free devices. The American Automobile Association’s Foundation for Traffic Safety has found that these devices actually increase the danger rather than decrease it.

There is plenty of other research that points to the fact that the danger from using mobile phones while driving stems from mental distraction, rather than devoting one hand to using the phone.

It is also symptomatic of a general problem, negligence of the continued lack of attention to the road. There seems to be a continual increase of distracting gadgets in cars, rather than a focus toward being aware of the task at hand.
