Michael Harding and ‘south Ulster’

Sir, – I want to congratulate my old school friend Michael Harding for what I think is the first time in the media I've seen the term "south Ulster" ("The champions of Brexit are like distressed orangutans", July 20th). Without a Border, the south Ulster area would consist of Cavan, Fermanagh and Monaghan. However, we should mention that Fermanagh now is part of another jurisdiction, and I doubt if Arlene Foster would allow us to use the name Fermanagh in conjunction with Cavan and Monaghan. With Brexit, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal will lose their natural hinterland. And we may be back to spikes on the Border to reduce the number of crossings.

Cavan and Monaghan together need to promote the south Ulster name, as it is the only way that the population of the Pale will know where both counties lie. – Yours, etc,

PATRICK CONATY.
