‘How is the new Taoiseach younger than me?’

Sir, – Donald Clarke feels old when he reflects on the fact that the second biggest-selling song during the week of our new Taoiseach turning 18 was the practically contemporary Jack Your Body by Steve "Silk" Hurley ("How is the new Taoiseach younger than me?", June 17th). Clearly the passing of time has resulted in your columnist confusing his decades, with Steve "Silk" Hurley a hugely popular act in 1987. Of course, in 1997, the actual number one in Ireland at the midnight when our new Taoiseach turned 18 was Two Become One by the Spice Girls. Perhaps the idea that a present-day Taoiseach turning voting age to the sounds of Sporty, Posh, Baby and Ginger is, like the name of the fifth woman, Scary! – Is mise,

DAVE McCARTHY,
