Horses are right up our street

Sir, – Frank McNally'sIrishman's Diary ("Diplomatic nag", July 21st) recalling the triumph of Orby in the Epsom Derby of 1907 reminds me that this horse and many others are commemorated in a clutch of street names in my native East Belfast.

Not far from where my grandmother lived in Manna Grove (Manna won the Derby in 1925), the main intersection is where Ladas Drive and Grand Parade meet the Castlereagh Road. Ladas won the big race in 1894. and Grand Parade’s year was 1919.

You’ll find Parades, Drives, Gardens, and Groves immortalising not only Orby but Ormonde (winner in 1886), Cicero (1905), Pommern (1915), Trigo (1929), Blenheim (1930), and also Ard Patrick (elided into Ardpatrick) from 1902. – Yours, etc,

GEORGE HAMILTON,
