Fallout from Budget 2013

Sir, – I voted for this Government at the last general election and have always since then wished them well. They have made mistakes, but no other party or grouping of parties would have done better.

Notwithstanding that, the very idea of cutting into the allowances of carers of elderly sick people is nothing short of shameful. This latest effort in that direction will, I am led to understand, save some €27 million which represents approximately .077 per cent of the €3.5 billion that is being targeted overall. These carers should be completely exempt from and outside the entire cutbacks programme. Come on Taoiseach, come on Tánaiste, have a heart and do your sums again. – Yours, etc,
