Emails from school

Sir, – I have a suggestion for “Shirley”, who loathes communications from her child’s school (“How to let the supermothers do all the hard work without bothering you”, Health + Family, August 25th).

Why not just try skimming those dreaded emails to see if there is anything relevant to your child?

You might discover that she is playing a camogie match soon, or that she has a part in a play, and perhaps even be inspired to come along, give your child some support and enjoy yourself in the process. You might discover that a packet of Jaffa Cakes is a perfectly acceptable donation to the cake sale, or that the Christmas fair you hate is actually raising money for library books, computers, toys and musical instruments your child might like to use.

And if that all seems like too much trouble, why not hire a nanny and delegate the job to her? That will give you lots of time to ponder why you ever had children in the first place. – Yours, etc,
