Defending academics and medics in Bahrain

Sir, – The revelation that a delegation from RCSI has apologised to the Al Khalifa regime over the resignation of Prof Tom Collins is most disturbing (Home News, April 3rd).

The regime has abducted and tortured 50 medical personnel, including Irish- trained surgeons Ghassan Dhaif, Bassim Dhaif and Ali Al-Ekri. The regime has attracted severe criticism from Human Rights Watch, Human Rights First, Amnesty International, Physicians for Human Rights, the United Nations Human Rights Council, the European Parliment and the American Senate, to name but a few.

Perhaps it is time for the Irish Medical Council to conduct an investigation into the RCSI activities in Bahrain. – Yours, etc,

Prof DAMIAN
