Cogito, ergo sum

Sir, – In your Editorial (July 21st) you highlighted the recent appointment of a municipal philosopher in the town of Corigliano d’Otranto, Italy. That development has prompted the local community into greater philosophical introspection. You cited examples of postcards for sale which ask questions such as “Why were you born?” among more mundane municipal publications such as “How to pay your water rates”.

It seems to me that Ireland has scope for similar services; the matter-of-fact problems of paying water rates in Italy is a complex philosophical conundrum in this country. – Yours, etc,
