Accommodation crisis affects jobs

Sir, – Last week’s announcement of new jobs at the Cork-based outsource services company, Voxpro, is welcome news for the region.

The good news was accompanied by concerns from the founder Dan Kiely that staff were experiencing accommodation difficulties when taking up employment. A similar concern was articulated by PayPal some weeks ago for its Blanchardstown and Dundalk sites.

Surely any employer offering a typical start salary of €22,000, much lower than the national living wage, will have to turn to the State for help.

The alternative would be for these growing companies to decentralise to cheaper locations outside of the main cities and benefit rural communities with their employment opportunities.
