A ‘big ask’ of politicians

Sir, – While enduring a surfeit of irritating clichés, from “thinking outside the box” to “stepping up to the plate” so favoured by Irish politicians, I am now in shock at the latest hideous expression: “the big ask”.

To see a verb suddenly become a noun is bad enough, but the rampant proliferation of this ludicrous expression among politicians, is enough to drive one to buy a pair of ear plugs when watching the news on TV.

“Having said that” I hope that, perhaps, the lethal virus can be eradicated before it “spreads like wildfire” among the general population! – Yours, etc,

DECLAN COLLINGE,
