AFTER Elvis Costello first appeared on Top Of The Popsin the late 1970s, a teacher at my school said he would like to “take him out and give him a good thumping”. Costello’s crime was not his surly and sardonic demeanour or his rowdy “New Wave” music – it was because he took the name of the saintly Elvis Presley in vain.
