Mon 07 Jul 2010Ireland's interest ends after doubles
TENNIS DAVIS CUPIRELAND’S INTEREST in this year’s Davis Cup finished on Saturday as a talented Lithuanian side won the doubles match to add to their two singles wins on Friday night. The unassailable 3-0 lead pushed Lithuania through to the next round and into a play-off against Slovenia for promotion while Ireland remain in their Euro\African Group II for next year.
The hope now is that Ireland is drawn in the same side of the pool as the Britain team, which remains in the same group, having avoided a humiliating relegation over the weekend. Had they lost to Turkey they would have fallen into the bottom tier for the first time in the nation’s history
