  • Early birds take the honours

As if to confirm that old cliche that the early-bird catches the worm, the first two teams out in yesterday's pre-tournament Irish Open Pro-Am captured the main honours. In fact, Des Smyth's team - who started proceedings at 7.15 a.m. from the 10th - managed to hold off all-comers to take first place with a Stableford score of 86 points. p

  • Relaxed and ready to take on the challenge

You can picture his mind, that of the analytical accountant, racing at a million miles an hour. You can imagine him assessing every nuance and quirk of a course that managed to stay out of his reach when he was the country's top amateur. He's like a man who has discovered a new friend, and wondered why it took so long. p

  • Olazabal has the key to Open

Diplomacy doesn't come quite so easily to 20-year-olds, especially when they happen to be speaking in a foreign language. So it was that Sergio Garcia admitted yesterday that the Old Course wouldn't have been his venue of choice for the defence of the £1 million Murphy's Irish Open, starting this morning. p

  • New language over at ITV

Day 15, but it feels like Day Three. Time's winging it. It's been tasty, nay, delectable. Have to feel particularly happy for the youngsters. No longer will they have to listen to auld fellas blathering on about `the modrin game and how rubbish it is'. "You were saying," they're now entitled to ask their elders, with a cheeky wink. p

  • Zidane France's saviour

Controversy erupted in Brussels last evening as France stumbled into the final of Euro 2000 by virtue of a golden goal scored by Zinedine Zidane in the 24th minute of extra time. p

  • One match too far for gallant Portuguese

In any competition this big, teams are entitled to start suffering from cases of the jitters when they're only one match off the final. The fact is that it's probably more a tribute than anything else to the quality of football produced by both the French and Portuguese prior to last night's game that this contest felt like such a let-down. p

  • Orange tide mixed blessing for Dutch

Frank Rijkaard sat upstairs in the white marquee. He was surrounded by grey journalists. He sat against a backdrop that was white with green and red sponsors' logos all over it. The jumper he wore was black. The players who followed him wore blue. p

  • Mystic Monks the pacemakers

Maybe we have a vertigo problem here. For the 11th time in 17 weeks, there's a new name at the top of our overall leaderboard after Paul Ryan's Raiders 5 came over all dizzy and woozy on reaching the summit last week. Either that or you're all reluctant to lead from the front and are hoping Fionnuala McMahon will act as your pacemaker between now and September. p
  • Hundreds of thousands of reasons to buy Irish

Sometimes we're asked why we insist on our managers using up some of their budgets on a home-produced player. Well, apart from it being our modest contribution to the "Buy Irish" campaign it adds an interesting auld twist to weeks like this. p

  • Central battle crucial

When Italy's elegant central defender Alessandro Nesta came out to meet the media at the team's training camp in Geel, near Antwerp, the other day, he was slightly taken aback by one of the early questions. p

  • Glory days over, now Leitrim just crave a win

Winter training in Leitrim is characterised by an intimacy which small numbers bring. With over half the squad resident in Dublin, the home-based crew found themselves huddling close during the heavy running, for fear that one of them might get lost. p

So the wait continues. Declan Ryan is still hopeful of being fit for Tipperary's Munster hurling final meeting with Cork in Thurles on Sunday but for the time being the centre forward position has been left vacant. p

  • Norman fails to live up to promise

Magnus Norman made another stab yesterday at entering the public consciousness and this time succeeded. Acknowledging that his image is as appealing as a long wet winter night in Filipstad, Norman made his exit to unseeded Olivier Rochus, the Belgian with a toothpick physique and who is even less recognised than the Wimbledon third seed. p
