Mon 07 Jul 2010An Irishman's Diary
THE year I paid the first of many visits to Oileán Chléire, Cape Clear island, nine miles out from Baltimore in west Cork was 1961. On the way over in the Naomh Ciarán, sharing deck space with bags of coal and the week’s groceries, I wondered what a Gaeltacht area would be like.
No need to worry, I loved every minute of the visit! I remember the richness of the Irish language and the efforts of Tadhg Ó Síocháin to expand my vocabulary and improve my blas. There was fishing and for dinner mackerel and potatoes – every day!
