    • Writing to The Irish Times

      The Irish Times receives a great many letters each day and it is possible to find space for only a small selection. Therefore, in fairness to both letterwriters and readers, short letters are preferred to long ones. When writing, please also bear in mind that letters ranging over several topics are unlikely to appear. It is generally best to make one point as concisely as possible, without preamble. When referring to an article, report or previous letter in The Irish Times, it is helpful to give the date of publication, if possible. p

    • An Irishman's Diary

      The final part of Peter Cunningham's Waterford trilogy, Love in One Edition, was published a few weeks ago. If anything shows the craziness of the book-buying market, and the random injustice of how authors and their works are promoted, the failure of his latest work to make it into the best-sellers list does so admirably. For this is not merely a serious work, finely crafted, excellently plotted, and quite beautifully written, but it is the apt conclusion to a major literary undertaking. p

    • The Teachers' Conferences

      After a difficult and challenging period for the profession, the teachers' conferences, which begin today, provide an opportunity for some serious reflection. The campaign of industrial action by the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland (ASTI) through the winter has left a bitter legacy. The status and traditional high-standing of the profession have been damaged by a campaign in which vulnerable examination students were targeted. Relations between teachers and both parents and students have been destabilised. In more general terms, the sense of solidarity among the three teaching unions has been broken. p

      The voyage of the MV Etireno with its cargo of child slaves has aroused the curiosity and the compassion of many comfortable Europeans. It has brought attention to the growing practice of slavery not only in Africa but in also in the very heart of Europe. p
