90% of survivors of rape know attacker
New data released by Rape Crisis Network Ireland indicates that the perpetrator is known to the survivor in nine out of 10 single incidents of rape or sexual violence. Sexual abuse of children by strangers is just 3 per cent.
In advance of the publication of the network’s 2010 report next Wednesday, director Fiona Neary said most people were at greater risk of rape or sexual violence within their “circle of trust” than among strangers.
The family home, and the survivor’s home, remain the main location of perpetration of sexual violence.
